Canada is one of the largest exporters of forest products in the world, and forestry is an important part of Canada’s economy. British Columbia is the source of 45% of Canada’s forest products. The paper we write on, the pencil we write with, the desk we use, the chair we sit on, even the buildings we live in, all come from trees. The forestry industry provides a great many jobs to Canadians across the country.

Our forests are also valuable to us when they remain as natural forests. Standing forests prevent erosion of our soil, which can happen when forests are clear-cut. Through photosynthesis, forests (trees and plants) produce all the gases we cannot live without such as oxygen (O2). In addition, forests clean the air by removing poisonous carbon dioxide (CO2) so that people and animals can breathe. Carbon dioxide levels also increase when we cut down forests, which contributes to the problem of global warming. As Canadian primary growth forests disappear, it becomes increasingly important to find a balance between the benefits of cutting downs trees and leaving forests intact and standing.
