Syncrude Aims High to Recruit and Support Aboriginal Employment and Business
With a successful Aboriginal Relations Program, Syncrude proves to be one of the top employers in terms of hiring Aboriginals and supporting Aboriginal business. Syncrude is, for example, the only business in Canada to have achieved gold level accreditation for the third time with the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business and its Progressive Aboriginal Relations program.
Aside from supporting Aboriginal business, Syncrude is also involved in the increased recruitment of Aboriginal people. Residents of Fort Chipewyan First Nation are benefiting from the Fort Chipewyan Rotational Employment Program. This program provides career opportunities while allowing Fort Chipewyan residents to maintain a physical link to their community, homes, and heritage. Planning is underway to introduce the program to the communities of Conklin and Janvier.
Through their Aboriginal Development Program, Syncrude focuses on the following six key commitment areas:
• corporate leadership • employment • business development • education and training • community development • the environment
Syncrude currently employs over 400 Aboriginal people who represent about 9% of their total employee population. As one of the largest employers of Aboriginal people in Canada, BEAHR would like to recognize Syncrude’s best practices in recruiting and retaining Aboriginal employees.

"The fitness test was a challenge—but not physically. The hardest part was having the guts to do it. I was the only woman and there were 50 men. Everyone stared at me, wondering if I'd make it. I did. What did I learn from that experience? Give it a shot, whatever it is you want to do. Who knows what you can do until you try it? If you don’t like it, you don’t have to do it forever." |
